Getting past *How are you?* / *Fine, thank you*

Getting past How are you? / Fine, thank you

Same ten seconds. Two completely different outcomes.

Version A — the one you were taught in school:

— How are you?
— Fine, thank you. And you?
— I'm fine too, thank you.
— …

Version B — the one real people actually have:

— Hey, how's it going? ↗
— Oh, not bad — you? ↘
— Yeah, pretty good. Bit of a crazy morning, though.
— Oh yeah? What happened?

Every sentence in Version A is grammatically perfect. And it's dead on arrival. That's not a conversation — it's two answering machines reading their greetings at each other.

Fine, thank you.

  1. 除了 How are you?,開場(opener 開場白)至少會 5 種以上自然講法。

First, just listen —

— What's up? ↗
— Not much, you? ↘

Morning! How's it going? ↗
— Good, thanks — you? ↘

— Hey stranger! How've you been? ↗
— Oh, you know — busy. Good busy, though.

— How ya doin'? ↗
— Can't complain. ↘ Yourself?

— Long week, huh? ↘
Tell me about it. ↘

— Whatcha been up to? ↗
— Not a lot, honestly. Just work.

— How was your weekend? ↗
— Yeah, good! Pretty chill. You do anything?

— Hey! Good to see you. ↘
— You too! It's been ages. ↘

— What's goin' on? ↗
— Same old, same old. ↘

— You doing okay? ↘
— Yeah, I'm good — just a bit tired.

Notice how short they are. Nobody's giving a speech. Two, three words, then it bounces back. That bounce is the whole game — we'll pull it apart in a minute.

  • What's up? / What's going on?
  • How've you been?
  • Can't complain. —
  • Long week, huh? —
  • Tell me about it.
  • Same old, same old.
  • It's been ages.
  • Whatcha been up to?

那叫 reduction 縮讀,是真人講話的常態——goinggoin'what have you 糊成 whatcha。

An opener isn't one line — it's a volley

flowchart LR A["A 開場(opener):How's it going?"] --> B["B 輕答+回球:Not bad, you?"] B --> C["A 接住+丟一點料:Pretty good — busy morning, though"] C --> D["球開始滾,對話啟動"]

Fine, thank you.

這是你最常用的一組,也是最該把 How are you?

Opener Register
What's up? / What's going on? casual
How's it going? casual~
How's it going? / How ya doing? casual
How've you been?
How's your day going?
Good to see you!
How are you?
How have you been keeping?

Say them out loud with the stress and you'll hear how different they feel:

What's up, man? ↗
— Heyyy — not much! ↘

— Hey! How've you been? ↗ It's been forever.
— I know, right? So good to see you.

Morning, Sarah. How's your day going so far? ↗
— Oh, you know — Mondays. ↘ You?

三個小地方,讓「打招呼」瞬間比 How are you? 自然:

  1. 前面加個招呼詞Hey / Hi / Morning / Hey there。裸著上一句 How are you?
Hey, Tom! / What's up, man?(男生朋友間)。
  3. 升調 ↗ 讓它像招呼、不像審問How's it going?

💬 What's up?

Point at the shared thing:

Busy day, huh? ↘
— Oh, tell me about it. Non-stop since nine.

— Is this seat taken? ↗
— Nope, all yours. ↘

— You waiting for the 3 o'clock too? ↗
— Yeah — think it's running late, though. ↘

— How's the project coming along? ↗
— Getting there! Slowly. ↘

— Did you catch the game last night? ↗
No, don't tell me — I recorded it!

  • Busy day, huh? / Crazy morning, right?
  • How was your weekend? —
  • Any plans for the weekend? —
  • How's the [class / project / move] going? —
  • Is this seat taken? / Mind if I sit here?
  • You new here?

right? Long line.

  • Is this seat taken? —
  • Getting there.
  • You waiting for the 3 o'clock too?
  • Did you catch the game?
  • Mind if I sit here?
  • You new here?

Crazy weather, huh? ↘
Right? I did not dress for this. ↘

— Have you been to one of these before? ↗
— First time, actually. You? ↗

— That looks good — what did you get? ↗
— The matcha one. It's so good.

— Is the line always this long? ↘
— Pretty much, yeah. Worth it though.

— Are you here for the conference too? ↗
— Yeah! You came for the keynote?

— I love your bag. Where's it from? ↗
— Oh, thank you! It was a gift, actually.

  • Crazy weather, huh? / Can you believe this rain? —
  • First time here? / Have you been to one of these before?
  • Is the line always this long?
  • That looks good — what did you get?
  • Love your [jacket / dog / bag]. Where's it from?
  • Are you here for the [wedding / talk] too?

How much do you make?(你賺多少)、Are you married?(你結婚了嗎)會讓場面瞬間凍結——那不是文法問題,是 register 語域選錯:太近、太私。

  • Crazy weather, huh? —
  • I did not dress for this.
  • Have you been to one of these before?
  • Worth it though. —
  • Where's it from?
  • Are you here for the conference too?

When it's aimed at you — don't let it die

Why does Fine, thank you. kill it?

  1. Register 太正式——How's it going?

輕答(light answer)+ 回球(return the question)+(丟一點小料 / a hook)

Step 1 — 輕答:a light answer

Light answer 感覺
Not bad. / Not too bad.
Pretty good.
Good, thanks.
Can't complain.
Same old. / Same old, same old.
Busy, but good.
Hanging in there.
Tired, honestly.

Step 2 — 回球:return the question

  • …you?
  • How about you?
  • What about you?
  • And you? / And yourself?

Step 3 — 丟一點小料:leave a hook

— How's it going? ↗
— Pretty good! Just got back from Japan, actually. ↘ You?

Whereabouts?

Watch the whole shape in action:

— Hey, how's it going? ↗
Not bad, you? ↘
— Yeah, good — bit tired, long week.
Right? Almost Friday, though.

— What's up? ↗
— Oh, not much — just grabbing a coffee before the meeting. You? ↗
— Same, honestly. Need it. ↘

— How've you been? ↗
Busy! We just moved, so it's been total chaos. ↘ You?
— Oh wow, you moved? Whereabouts?

看到了嗎——coffee before the meetingwe just moved 都是鉤子。

  • Not bad. / Pretty good. / Can't complain. —
  • Same old (, same old).
  • Hanging in there.
  • …you? / How about you?
  • Just grabbing a coffee before the meeting.
  • We just moved. —
  • Whereabouts?

One intent, many lines —

What's up? · How's it going? · How've you been? · How's your day going? · How are you?
Busy day, huh? · How was your weekend? · How's the project going? · Is this seat taken?
Crazy weather, huh? · First time here? · That looks good — what did you get? · Love your bag, where's it from?
接球(別人先開口) Not bad, you? · Pretty good — you? · Can't complain, yourself?

1. How do you do? 想客氣,用 Nice to meet you.(第一次見)或 How are you? 就好。

How's it going? / What's up? 有人問 What's up?,你回 Well, this morning I woke up at seven, then I…——對方會愣住。

3. Fine, thank you. And you? Good, thanks — you?

  3. 接球演練:想像有人對你說 How's it going?——限自己 2 秒內回一句「輕答 + you?
How's it going? / What's up?

Recap

Fine, thank you.
(How's it going? / What's up? / How've you been?)、搭話(Busy day, huh? / How was your weekend?)、破冰(Crazy weather, huh?
  • correct ≠ natural 的活標本How do you do?、把招呼句認真回答、Fine, thank you.
